WHITE PAPER SUMMARY

Who Owns Your Data

(In the land of security: where privacy, technology and the legal system meet)

This white paper provides insight into the loss of data control and ownership of personal and corporate information as it passes through intermediary service centers. According to Mike Huestis, author of Who Owns Your Data, "In an age where information is increasingly more valuable this kind of exposure represents one of the largest legal problems in modern communications technology." Huestis points to two cases of intrusion on personal and corporate information: 1) attacks from unfriendly agencies, such as extortionists and thieves, and 2) attacks from friendly agencies, such as federal and state governments.

Huestis discusses the reliance on vast storage facilities, where information is housed on central servers, databases and switches allowing for greater exposure to theft, misuse and general invasion of privacy. As an alternative, Huestis presents an overview of peer-to-peer architecture, where voice, data or messaging session would never be archived at a central site. He also looks at preserving the security of user identity and session data and information.
